The unofficial fixers who operate around government offices — the DVLA, passport offices, the ports — offering to obtain documents faster, or without the tests and queues.

They are called goro boys, and they are a fixture.

Using them is a bad idea, and not only on principle. A driving licence obtained without the tests fails verification and can leave you uninsured after a crash. A document obtained irregularly is a document that can be revoked.

Ghana has an active anti-corruption discourse and formal complaint channels. The official process is slower and it holds up.
